Kate Middleton presents St Patrick’s Day shamrocks to guardsmen

The Duchess enjoyed the ceremonial military parade before she presented shamrocks to 40 officers and their Irish wolfhound mascot. The military band played the Irish folk song ‘Carrickfergus’ during the ceremony.

The presenting of the shamrocks began on St Patrick’s Day in 1901, when Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward II presented the three-leafed clover to members of the regiment.

Keeping with tradition some 450 soldiers from the first battalion marched in their signature scarlet tunics and bearskins.

Kate Middleton crowned Headwear Association’s ‘Hat Person of the Year’ after claiming 90% of the votes

The Headwear Association has named the Duchess of Cambridge its ‘Hat Person of the Year’.

Ninety-one per cent of the California-based organisation’s members voted for her in an online poll, placing her ahead of U.S. celebrities Rachel Zoe and Ne-Yo.

She has raised the profile, not only of established names like Philip Treacy and Sylvia Fletcher of Lock & Co, but also little-known designers such as Rose Cory and Vivien Sheriff.

And though the engagements for which she chooses to wear hats are not unusual – church services, weddings and Royal Ascot – her influence has inspired many people to sport formal headwear for all manner of special occasions.

Last year, the award went to Johnny Depp, and before that, Brad Pitt. Men’s hat sales also seem to be running along just fine.

Royal wedding guests given ‘etiquette guide’

Royal wedding guests have been sent a 22-page list of do’s and don’ts – including how to hold their teacups.

The etiquette guide has commonsense tips such as not clashing with bride Kate Middleton’s outfit by wearing white or cream and keeping phones silent.

But there is also advice for the 1,900 guests on how to greet the Queen.

Meanwhile, separate instructions to caterers have given strict orders that staff must not look at Her Majesty or other royals while serving.

A Palace source said yesterday: “Etiquette is very important but for some it will be a minefield. That’s why this guide will help.

“Guests are asked to arrive at least 20 minutes before the ceremony begins.

“As the Queen enters Westminster Abbey, everybody has to acknowledge her arrival with a curtsey or bow as she walks through. The same must happen as she leaves.”

A key part of the guide deals with dress code. The Palace source explained: “Wearing the right hat and not overdoing it is important. Wearing cream or white is not appropriate. That must be left to the bride.

“Men in the Armed Forces should wear uniform and male civilians a lounge or morning suit. A top hat should be carried, not worn, inside the church.”
